Use
MSCONFIG to solve your Start-Up Problems
When your computer has trouble
completing a stable boot-up sequence, typically the cause can be identified by
using the MSCONFIG command. When your computer boots it can load dozens of programs
that you never see. Additionally, device drivers and other system-related files
are loaded automatically when your computer is turned on. If there is a problem
with any of these files or programs, it can cause your computer to become unstable
or prevent it from completing its boot sequence in the first place.
If you
are having trouble booting your PC in normal mode, you
may want to try Safe Mode. Once you have booted into Safe
Mode, simply follow the directions below for your operating system.

Windows 98/Me/XP
Windows 98/Me/XP includes the
System Configuration Utility. This utility makes it very easy to temporarily--or
permanently--stop items from loading when Windows starts.
Follow these
steps to configure the System Configuration Utility to start the computer in Safe
mode:
Note: The illustrations shown here are from a Windows 98 computer. The dialog boxes
will look different in Windows Me or XP, but the procedure is exactly the same
To disable startup items using the System Configuration Utility
- Close all open programs.
- Click Start > Run.
- As shown
in this illustration, type msconfig and then click OK.

- The System Configuration Utility appears. Click the Startup tab as
shown in this illustration.

- Scroll through the list. All items that have a check mark are programs that
start when you start Windows. Uncheck all unnecessary startup items.
If you
are not sure which items to uncheck, your computer manufacturer or a consultant
may be able to assist you in making the selection.
- When you are finished,
click Apply, and then click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart
the computer, click Yes.
Note: If at any time you want to reverse the procedure, repeat steps 1 to 5, and in
step 5, check the items that you want to load when Windows starts.
